Basic Facts You Need to Know About Low-Carb Diets

A lot of people are on some sort of diet plan these days. Some stick to their diet plan because they want to lose weight while others simply want to become healthy. Some people, on the other hand, want both.

One of the more popular diet plans out there is the low-carb diet. The low-carb diet is a weight loss plan that is followed not just by people who are ill or need to lose weight. It also has a fan base among people who are healthy and just want to maintain their good health. Nutritionists and physicians recognize the fact that low-carb diets can help greatly in preventing the causes of high cholesterol, hypoglycemia, obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

What Makes Low-Carb Diets Work

There are many kinds of low-carb diets out there. The more well-known programs are Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Protein Power, The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifestyle Plan, Life Without Bread, and Neanderthin, among many others. For all that there are many variations of the low-carb diet, the one thing they all have in common is that they greatly restrict carbohydrate intake.

Instead of eating carbohydrates, these low-carb diet plans mostly recommend eating foods rich in fat and protein. Most of these low-carb diets also call for sourcing out 60% to 70% of the calories that the body needs from fatty foods. Carbohydrates should take up only 10% of the total food intake, and should only make up 10% of the body's calorie consumption.

In addition, many of these low-carb diets let their followers to eat as much as they can until they are full as long as what they eat are foods that are not restricted from their diet plan. The food items that low-carb dieters are generally allowed to eat are fish, poultry, meat, cheese, and some green vegetables. Sticking to what is allowed and staying away from forbidden foods always yield the best results.
